China Covid19 Report on Travel Industry

Statistics
Updated 15 October, 2020, China Coronavirus Cases: 85622, Death: 4634, Recovered: 80748. Current Infected: 240, Recovered/Discharged: 95%, Death (closed cases): 5%.

Measures
China Government has halted all group tours to other countries to contain the spread of a new coronavirus. Domestic travel group was halted on 24 Jan 2020 and International group travel halted on 27 Jan 2020.
On July 14, Chinese Government lifted domestic cross state travel, on Aug 12, Macau reopened tourism for Chinese tourist, a sign of testing China outbound travel opening.

Recovery
Minus closed cases, China are now 95% recovered. Chinese have returned to work with factories, offices, shops, restaurants opened. Sign of progress by World Health Organization (WHO) and several countries with clinical trials for treatments and China cases is declining and lowest new cases. Some travel fairs is postponed or turn virtual: ITB, ITCM, COTTM, ATM, WTM. On the positive note, some travel fairs in China has gone LIVE since September.

Travel Industry
Chronologically, China Hotel is showing sign of recovery with occupancy reaching 32% in April 1, up from 7% in early February, according to STR data. Beijing occupancy rate was around 10% in early March but climb to 22% at end of March. Shanghai was similar with 11% in early March and 29% end of March. Highest number of occupancy recovered is recorded by Xian and Chengdu with 36% respectively as of April 1. Ctrip CEO projected China domestic travel to recover within months. The latest recovery is evidence in the record tourist number in October "Golden Week" from Oct 1-8, 2020.
